Special Evening Event: Flutterby
by Andrea Kay
Flutterby is medicine for the soul. Yours. The patients you deal with. The families you support.
Flutterby is a spellbinding educational program presented in an innovative and artistic way that will help you gain a deeper understanding of what families go through and how to connect with patients and support families. It will open up your heart and mind about how to be with someone near the end of life.
Andrea Kay is an award-winning writer, artist and the creator of Flutterby, performance art developed in response to her father’s Alzheimer’s disease, his steady decline and finally, his death.
“When someone is dying, it’s hard to know how to be. What to feel. What to say. I found my way with Flutterby,” says Andrea. Flutterby was born from an artist’s and writer’s instinct to reach out, to connect, to preserve, to understand and to transcend the pain and uncertainty of inescapable loss. Andrea’s artwork offers visually arresting insights into the role of art and self expression in life’s most difficult moments. Her words are insightful, poetic and profound. Her delivery is inspirational.
Plan to join us for this special presentation the evening before opening day of the conference: Sunday, November 4 from 6:30 – 7:30 pm. Flutterby will give you a different perspective on patient/family experiences. It will inspire you in a deep and profound way. It will touch your heart, warm your soul and live on with you long after the conference curtain falls.
Posters and Poster Sessions with Faculty Discussion
Posters will be showcased in new ways at the CTC, presenting research, innovations, strategies and outreach ideas by using visual materials and handouts. Posters will provide the opportunity to learn, study and consider significant work presented in this visual medium.
Posters will be displayed Monday, November 5 through Wednesday, November 7 throughout the day. Poster “Sessions” will be held Tuesday, November 6, from 10:00 am – 11:00 am. Faculty will be available (on Tuesday only) to discuss their work, share ideas and resources and answer questions. Visit www.nhpco.org/ctc2012 for a list of posters to be showcased at the conference.
Reflection Room/Labyrinth
A unique and popular feature of each Clinical Team Conference is the NCHPP Reflection Room. It is a quiet, reverent place where conference attendees can take a break from the hustle and bustle of the conference and was created to honor the emotional and spiritual lives of those who provide nurturing care of others.
In conjunction with the Reflection room at this conference will be a Labyrinth. Labyrinths have long been used as meditation and prayer tools. A labyrinth represents a journey to our own center and back again out into the world, combining the imagery of the circle and spiral into a meandering but purposeful path. Walk your own spiritual journey on our Labyrinth. Visit the Reflection Room and Labyrinth several times during the conference to find comfort and take solace there.
