Description:

This session was recorded at NHPCO’s 11th Clinical Team Conference in Atlanta, Georgia.

So often the focus in hospice is (appropriately) on what we can do to help the patient and family. But in our enthusiasm to help them, what can be overlooked is what the hospice patient can do for those of us who are left behind. What can we learn from them? In-depth interviews with 104 hospice patients receiving care through Alive Hospice in Nashville, Tennessee, provided inspiring insight into what really matters in life when viewed through the lens of the “soon departed.” Dame Cicely Saunders, the founder of St. Christopher’s Hospice outside London, England, said “the community needs the dying to make it think of eternal issues and to make it listen.” We listened and heard.

Objectives:

  • Discuss the perspective of hospice patients as they near the end of life
  • Examine your own personal attitudes toward living and dying so that you will be better able to assist patients as well as to learn from them
  • Design a process for assuring that the broad voice of the patient is both valued and heard
