What do children need when confronted with the impending death of a significant person? How can we, as hospice and palliative care professionals, best provide support and guidance? This Audio Web Seminar will provide practical tools to increase participants’ confidence and skill in working with children and families. Topics addressed will include: understanding children’s developmental needs, components of successful coping and methods of engaging parents and families in the process of supporting children at such an important time in their lives. Participants will learn a theoretical framework within which they can work to help children and their families, as well as “hands-on” activities that can be utilized to facilitate healthy coping with loss. Case studies will provide practical application of the theories and skills taught in this seminar, and participants will leave with a renewed commitment to children’s needs.

Objectives:
  • Identify four specific areas of children’s needs in coping with impending death;
  • Describe a developmental approach to understanding and working with children;
  • Describe a framework for talking with children and their parents;
  • Identify three key “moments” where professionals can assist with children’s/families needs;
  • Describe two “hands-on” activities to actively engage children and their families.
