Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is the only major chronic disease that is increasing in prevalence and mortality in the United States and it is the fourth leading cause of death. It is consistently listed among the top five non-cancer admitting diagnoses for hospice programs nationally. Yet, knowledge about palliative and end-of-life care for patients with end-stage COPD is sadly limited. In this seminar, we will discuss the pathophysiology of COPD, the natural course of this disease, the challenges of prognostication, and practical ways that we can help relieve the suffering that is all to common for these patients during their final months and weeks. This seminar will be appropriate for all members of the interdisciplinary team including physicians, nurses, social workers, counselors, chaplains, volunteers and complimentary referral sources in your community.
Objectives:
- Describe the basic epidemiology and pathophysiology of COPD
- Discuss the natural course of COPD
- Identify the challenges of prognostication of patients with COPD
- Cite non-pharmacologic ways to relieve the sufferings of patients with end-stage COPD
- Cite pharmacologic ways to relieve the sufferings of patients with end-stage COPD
