The first in a series of ten pediatric palliative care modules, Pediatric Palliative Care Principles and Standards ensures a solid foundation upon which pediatric palliative care practice and programs can be built. Primarily theoretical and conceptual in nature, the module will ensure you understand the principles and standards that undergird quality pediatric palliative care practice. Practice examples and a case study woven through the module will provide an opportunity for you to apply principles and standards to the “real world.”

In this module, pediatric palliative care will be defined and explored, differences in caring for children will be discussed, the types of conditions for which palliative care is most beneficial will be identified and an in-depth explanation of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization’s Standards of Practice for Pediatric Palliative Care will be provided.

Objectives:

  • Identify three unique differences in caring for children
  • Name four categories of conditions in children for which palliative care is beneficial
  • Describe where and how to access National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization’s (NHPCO) standards for pediatric palliative care and hospice
