The third in a series of ten pediatric palliative care modules, Ethics, Decision-Making, Advance Care Planning provides a complete overview of decision making, communication strategies, and advance care planning when caring for children with life-threatening conditions and their families. In addition to outlining specific issues and strategies for each topic, the issues of uncertainty, conflict resolution, and difficult and unique ethical situations in pediatric palliative care are also discussed. In addition, a wealth of references regarding ethics, decision-making and advance care planning are provided to help your organization provide quality pediatric palliative care and hospice services in your community.
Objectives:
- Describe the basis of decision-making
- Define the role of the child in participating in decision-making
- Explore the basics of effective communication with children with life-limiting illnesses and their families; and
- Formulate an ethically and medically appropriate advance care plan that is consistent with the child’s and family’s goals, values and culture.
