The fourth in a series of ten pediatric palliative care modules, Childhood Development in Health and Illness provides in-depth exploration of childhood development and will help you understand children’s conceptual development with respect to their illnesses and respond in a developmentally appropriate manner.
In this module, children’s cognitive, emotional, social, cultural and spiritual development will be explored, and its application to pediatric palliative care will be demonstrated. Children’s and adolescents’ understanding of death and dying will be described, and implications for professional intervention with pediatric patients and their will be presented.
Objectives:
- Summarize cognitive, emotional, social, cultural and spiritual development in childhood and adolescence
- Articulate the importance of understanding child and adolescent development with respect to pediatric palliative care
- Describe children’s and adolescents’ concepts of serious illness
- Articulate the importance of understanding children’s and adolescents’ concepts of illness with respect to pediatric palliative care
- Describe children’s and adolescents’ understanding of death and dying
- Articulate the importance of understanding children’s and adolescents’ concepts of death and dying matters with respect to pediatric palliative care
- Describe how an understanding of childhood development in health and illness impacts pediatric palliative care planning and services
