The sixth in a series of ten pediatric palliative care modules, Pediatric Palliative Care-Assessment and Management of Pain will provide pediatric palliative care practitioners with state-of-the art information about how to best care for children. A review of the frequency, incidence and causes of pain and its impact upon children, their families and the clinicians caring for them is provided. The module discusses pain management principles and details strategies to enable clinicians to accurately assess and treat pain. Barriers to successful pain management and adverse reactions to treatment strategies are detailed, along with suggestions for how to mitigate them. Integrative therapies designed to assist in pain management are also provided.
Objectives:
- Identify the most appropriate pain assessment instrument based upon the age, developmental level and cognition of the child.
- Describe the mechanism of action of opioids, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and other adjuvant pharmacotherapy and their age-related physiological trends relevant to analgesic drug action.
- Recognize opioid-related adverse drug events such as pruritus, nausea, vomiting, and constipation and their treatment.
- Identify integrative therapies for pain and know how to suggest and implement age- appropriate techniques.
- Describe common barriers to effective pain control, and the impact of unrelieved suffering on children, their families and palliative care providers.
