Webinar Description
Hospice live discharges are a reality and are happening more frequently, and CMS is watching live discharges very closely.  This Webinar will review the basic regulatory requirements of discharges, revocations, and transfers and complicating factors related to each process.  Participants will learn when to issue the ABN and NONMC related to discharge and the components of expedited review (patient appeal) process.  Faculty will discuss the role of the hospice, these changes in hospice service and how they relate to maintaining regulatory compliance.  Finally, the Webinar will identify resources available to hospice providers regarding hospice revocations, transfers and discharges.
Faculty
Susan Gerhart, BSN
Susan is the National Director of Reimbursement and Outcomes for AseraCare and is a member of the NHPCO Regulatory Committee. She has over 40 years experience across the healthcare continuum including medical-surgical acute care nursing, home health care and hospice care. She was also a clinical instructor of medical-surgical nursing and maternal-Child health nursing.  Susan has 29 years experience with AseraCare serving in both operations as Executive Director for Hospice and Home Health as well as Clinical Compliance, Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement. She is a Past President of the Pennsylvania Homecare Association. In her current role, she is responsible for oversight and monitoring of hospice, home health and palliative medicine clinical records for regulatory compliance and provides education and direction to agencies responding to a request for clinical records from any federal, state or third party payer. Susan received her BSN from Cornell University-New York Hospital. She is a member of the Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society.

Jennifer L. Kennedy, MA, BSN, CHC, LNC
Jennifer is the Regulatory and Compliance Director and Education Nurse Planner for the National Hospice & Palliative Care Organization.  She has over 25 years of experience as a leader and nurse in diverse healthcare settings in numerous areas of the United States and has worked in hospice care for more than 16 years.  She has served at the Director level for several prominent national and regional healthcare organizations in operations, clinical care, education, compliance, quality assurance, performance improvement, and program development.  She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from DeSales University, and graduated with honors with a dual Master’s of Arts degree in Health Counseling and Case Management from Trinity University in Washington, DC.  Jennifer is a certified Healthcare Compliance Professional and Legal Nurse Consultant.

At the completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

• Examine the regulatory requirements for hospice patient discharges, revocations and  transfers;
• Present case studies and work through discharge, revocation, and  transfer scenarios;
• Describe when to issue the ABN and NONMC related to discharge and components of expedited review;
• Identify resources available to hospice providers regarding hospice revocations, transfers and discharges.
