Advocacy/Public Policy Events

NHPCO and Hospice Action Network are proud to host:

Conversations before the Crisis: The Intersection of Family, Faith and Policy in Advance Care Planning as the premiere policy event at 2013 MLC on Tuesday, April 23, 2013 from 1:00 pm - 5:15 pm at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center.

We are excited to offer the opportunity for NHPCO members to be a part of a national policy symposium on such a timely and important issue.

This national policy symposium will launch a national conversation on critical topics centered on three key themes:

  • Avoiding family conflict through advance care planning;
  • Exploring the faith and spiritual aspects of end-of-life decision making; and
  • Acknowledging the political and economic realities of providing care in the last years of life.

Topics explored will include:

  • Informed patient decision making
  • Barriers to fulfilling patient wishes
  • The roles of individuals and institutions in care planning
  • The importance of naming a healthcare surrogate
  • Creating a systematic approach to honoring the intent of an individual in his or her final months, weeks and days of life. The half-day symposium will include two non-partisan panels featuring policy makers, faith leaders, caregivers and journalists
Transportation will be provided for this event, leaving the hotel at 11:15 on Tuesday, April 23 and returning to the hotel when the event ends at 5:15 PM. Space is very limited, so be sure to register for this free event on the conference registration form.

Congressional Meetings

We recognize that many MLC attendees use the opportunity of being in DC to meet with their members of Congress, so the Hospice Action Network (HAN) will be offering support to those who wish to go to Capitol Hill on Wednesday morning. An Issue Briefing will be held on Wednesday morning, April 24, with materials available for attendees who wish to schedule their own Congressional meetings for that day.

The Hospice Action Network will not be scheduling Hill meetings or providing transportation to Capitol Hill from the Gaylord Hotel during MLC.
