Wyden-Feingold Hospice Amendment

Tell Congress to Support Wyden-Feingold Hospice Amendment to Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act

(Alexandria, VA)—The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) and affiliate lobbying organization, the Alliance for Care at the End of Life, today urged the hospice community nationwide to reach out to Members of Congress in support of the Wyden-Feingold amendment to eliminate health care reform “productivity” cuts to hospice.

The U.S. Senate yesterday began debate on its health reform proposal, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The deliberations are expected to last up to three weeks, and then the House and Senate will work out their differences in a "Conference Committee."

The House already passed productivity cuts to hospice as part of health care reform, and the Senate bill contains similar language. Senators Ron Wyden (D-OR.) and Russ Feingold (D-WI) have stepped up as champions of hospice during this debate.  The anticipated Wyden-Feingold amendment would strike the hospice productivity cuts and, instead, offer an alternative that would take into account hospice's unique patient-centered approach.

In a call to action to Hospice advocates, NHPCO stressed the importance of reaching out to Members of Congress to ensure continued access to hospice after the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is passed.

“To lay the groundwork for the Wyden-Feingold effort, the hospice community needs to act today to educate their Senators about this development.  Things could move very quickly, and we need to make sure that Senate offices are primed and familiar with the Wyden-Feingold effort before they are asked to act on it,” NHPCO said.

NHPCO has also posted updated messaging documents for the Senate and the House on its Hospice Advocacy Web page.
