Membership by the Numbers
- NHPCO represents approximately 80% percent of hospices nationwide.
- NHPCO maintains a 90 percent member retention rate even as membership among new providers continues to grow.
- NHPCO estimates that over 1.45 million patients were served by hospice in 2008 — an increase of more than 700,000 people since 2000.
- NHPCO estimates that 80 percent of hospice patients and families are cared for by an NHPCO member annually.

- Associate Members
Organizations that provide a service to hospices and/or palliative care professionals or support the hospice and/or palliative care mission, vision, and standards for program of care.
Examples of Associate Members are: consultants, insurance/risk management firms, legal services, medical supply companies, pharmaceutical organizations, software vendors, Disease Management Organizations, DME (Durable Medical Equipment), Health Insurance Plans, staffing agency/services, foundations, home health agencies, religious organizations, grief and bereavement center and grief and bereavement centers. - State Hospice Organizations
State-based trade/advocacy organization that subscribes to NHPCO's mission, vision and standards, represents a majority of the current NHPCO Provider members of the state, and has at least three (3) NHPCO Provider Members in its membership ranks.
