Campaign Statement It is my honor to run for the National Director seat for the NHPCO Board of Directors.  In my over 25 years of experience in the hospice field I have had the opportunity to serve Catholic Hospice as the founding director in Miami, Florida; Alive Hospice in Nashville,Tennessee; and now The Elizabeth Hospice in San Diego, California.  Additionally I formerly served in the capacity of Geographic Representative for the Southeast portion of the US. The culmination of these experiences has given me insight into not only the differences faced in different areas of the country but also the similarities  - a quality I would bring to my service as a National Director on the NHPCO Board of Directors. We face many challenges in the hospice field currently  which require strategic thinking and execution of strategy.  In the past several years I have had the opportunity to serve on a County Hospital Board of Directors, a Federally Qualified Healthcare Organization, and worked very closely with managed care organizations both Medicare  Advantage Plans and otherwise. The challenge we face with the new ACO's requires knowledge of other healthcare providers in order to best determine how hospice fits into the new healthcare puzzle. My experience in understanding these other healthcare providers more thoroughly will help as we strategize how NHPCO can best prepare providers for our new realities.

The other  looming and current challenge of significance is that of increased scrutiny of our field.  I always refer to this as being victims of our own success. We have truly made a tremendous  difference in how the dying are cared for in our society and prospered as a result. Now we are more apt to endure intense scrutiny.  With my background in the field of Ethics I feel competent  to apply that experience as we address how best to prepare providers and CMS to  understand our regulations and comply with them.  In my service as a National Director it would be my privilege to ensure that doing the right thing is always top of mind.

And finally, but certainly not least, the challenge of reduced reimbursement needs to be addressed. believe it should be addressed two-fold -1) Preparing providers who are struggling with technical assistance to assist in living within  their means and 2) Continuing to advocate to keep hospice from enduring more cuts. As a National Director I would dedicate myself fully to these endeavors.

I am proud of our National Organization and all it has done to make hospice care what it is today and would be honored to serve as a member of the board to continue to move the National Agenda forward. Thank you for considering my nomination and I look forward to the opportunity to serve.
