Successful hospice and palliative care professionals not only understand and manage their own emotions, they understand and appreciate the emotions of others. This Webinar provides you the opportunity evaluate and cultivate your emotional intelligence. Faculty will share new strategies for creating a more emotionally intelligent work environment to support your role in the care of patients and families. 

Webinar Objectives

At the completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the role and value of emotional intelligence
  • Identify emotional triggers that affect hospice and palliative care professionals
  • Describe a method for shifting a potentially destructive encounter into an effective encounter


Joy Berger, DMA, FT, BCC, MT-BC

Dr. Joy Berger is a passionate, purposeful hospice and palliative care educator for professionals and volunteers, and for patients’ caregivers and families. As a chaplain and music therapist at Hospice of Louisville (KY), Joy received NCHPP’s National Heart of Hospice Psychosocial/Spiritual Care award. As director of education and volunteers at Hosparus, she chaired NCHPP’s Research/Academic/Education section. As director of education for the Hospice Education Network, Joy developed content and coached hospice and palliative care educators—nationally—on ways to use online education to train staff and volunteers. Today, as owner/CEO of Composing Life Out of Loss, Joy equips hospice and palliative care organizations with creative, compassionate online education and support resources for patients’ caregivers and families, companioned with professional and volunteer training. Joy also wrote and taught NHPCO’s original “Emotional Intelligence” online module for the Manager Development Program. She authored Music of the Soul – Composing Life Out of Loss, published in Routledge’s Series in Death, Dying and Bereavement.

Counselor: The National Hospice and Palliative Care has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 6232. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. NHPCO is solely responsible for all aspects of the program. 1 NBCC Clock Hour offered.

Nurse: NHPCO is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
