Managing with an Eye on Finances

A Level I Online Module

This Level I, required module of NHPCO’s Hospice Manager Development Program is a online learning module available through E-OL: End-of-Life Online, NHPCO’s online education gateway. Participants will listen to recorded content, view accompanying slides and complete a test at the completion of the module.   

Module Description

Hospice managers need a sound foundation of the basics of financial performance and financial management.  Skills in risk management in the realm of financial management are also essential for today’s hospice. Participants will develop a framework for understanding necessary elements of hospice financial management.  Focus will be on the essential tools for hospice financial performance, including budgeting, key reports, and monitoring financial operations. This important overview offers a framework for effective functioning as a hospice manager.

Module Objectives

After completing this module, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the concepts behind maintaining a sound business and caring organization;
  • Discuss accounting terminology and principles;
  • Discuss the balance sheet, income statement, and budgeting processes;
  • Identify reporting needs and sample reports for effective management.

Module Structure

The module is a online learning course taken by one individual at a time. It can be completed in one sitting of approximately 2 hours.

Faculty: Teresa Craig, CPA

Teresa Craig, CPA, is the CEO of Suncoast Solutions, a developer of software for hospices and home care agencies.  Teresa was previously Chief Financial Officer for The Hospice of the Florida Suncoast in Largo, Florida. Ms. Craig has over 20 years experience consulting with and managing health care and human service organizations. Teresa travels throughout the country helping hospices achieve good accounting, reporting and systems. A frequent presenter at state and national conferences, she is committed to helping hospice programs achieve good financial practices and systems to support care for dying individuals and their families.

Module Requirements

Completion of the entire 2 hour module and its test is required. Participants must pass the test with a score of 100% for successful completion of the module for the Hospice MDP and for continuing education credit for nurses and social workers.

Continuing Education:

Continuing education credit is available for nurses and social workers who complete this module.

NHPCO is an approved provider of continuing education in nursing by the Virginia Nurses Association Continuing Education Approval Committee, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. VNA-CEA Provider Number 09-03-01. Successful completion of this module provides 2 contact hours.

This module is approved by the National Association of Social Workers (provider number 886414158) for 2 continuing education hours for social workers.
