Length: 1.5 hours
Since the beginning of time, the care of those who suffer and die has been a noble calling. The wisdom carried by the elderly, the dying and those who suffer is often an untapped resource.  Simply and profoundly, the practice of holding and listening has always released the power of this wisdom.  Quickly the question becomes: who is healing who? As we all need the wisdom the suffering carry.  None of this is possible without a practice of self-care by the caregiver.  In the opening plenary session, Mark will explore how to negotiate the heartening and disheartening forces of being a caregiver.  This is all part of the healer’s call.
Whether you are a counselor, hospice aide, nurse, physician, social worker, spiritual care or other professional, or a loved one at the bedside, when called to be a caregiver, each of us is thrust into the dangers and rewards of being so caring. As a cancer survivor, poet and spiritual teacher, Mark will explore the call and art of being a healer. Through his personal story and its common lessons, he will offer resources and skills from many traditions on the nature of spirit, self and medicine and their intrinsic kinships, and the implications that such innate connections have for our service and call as healers.

  • Identify ways to nurture caregivers’ authentic self and enhance self-knowing
  • Promote a sense of balance
  • Utilize skills to mitigate caregiver stress, impairment and burnout
