Founded in 1978, the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) is the nation’s largest membership organization for providers and professionals who care for people affected by serious and life-limiting illness. Its broad community of members includes local hospice and palliative care providers, networks serving large regions of the United States, and individual professionals.

Position

NHPCO is looking for a mission-focused, seasoned and strategic Chief Operating Officer (COO) with experience in cultivating a collaborative and innovative culture among a team of diverse and talented individuals. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the COO will be an integral member of NHPCO’s senior leadership team consisting of the CEO, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and the Chief Advocacy Officer (CAO). He or she will provide clinical and operational direction for NHPCO and its affiliated organizations and will deliver measurable, cost-effective results that support NHPCO’s vision. A successful COO at NHPCO will have the skills, sensitivity, and confidence to tap into the power that each member of the team brings to the mission.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned:

      • Leads and directs assigned functional areas.
      • Articulates and implements the strategic vision of the organization.
      • Evaluates the effectiveness of programs and provides guidance, strategic support, supervision, professional development and thought leadership to staff.
      • Supports the outcomes of the organization and delivers value to NHPCO members.
      • In partnership with the Chief Financial Officer and Chief Advocacy Officer:
          • Leads the performance management process that measures and evaluates progress against organizational goals.
          • Provides a strong day-to-day leadership presence by supporting an open-door policy.
          • Leads the development of programs, services, and workplans in alignment with strategic priorities.
      • Leads and manages the following functional areas:
          • Quality—ensures all quality initiatives are developed and carried out efficiently and effectively and are consistent with NHPCO’s vision, mission, goals and strategic priorities.
          • Palliative & Advanced Care—leads the development of and provides oversight and direction for palliative and advanced care resources for NHPCO members and consumers.
          • Communications—oversees and directs an effective integrated communications strategy reinforcing NHPCO’s mission and vision.
          • Education—oversees the development and implementation of an educational strategy for NHPCO members.
          • Human Resources—instills a human capital development and coaching culture by providing leadership and oversight of the human resource function, including training, development, compensation and benefits, employee relations, performance evaluation, recruiting and workforce planning.
          • Development—serves as Executive Director of the National Hospice Foundation (NHF); develops and implements an integrated and strategic philanthropic vision.
          • Building Operations/Facilities—provides oversight for building operations and facilities management.

NHPCO is seeking a candidate that has proven experience in organizational leadership and an ability to both lead and build the capabilities of a driven, bright and diverse team. The successful candidate will possess humble confidence, can both lead and take direction, and demonstrate discipline and focus to achieve the NHPCO’s goals.

      • Capacity Building—ability to effectively build organization and staff capacity, developing a top-notch workforce and the processes that ensure the organization runs smoothly.
      • Leadership and Organization—exceptional capacity for managing and leading people; ability to connect with staff both on an individual level and in large groups; capacity to enforce accountability, develop and empower top-notch leaders from the bottom up; lead from the top down; learn the strengths and weaknesses of the team, putting people in a position to succeed.
      • Action Oriented—enjoys working hard and looks for challenges; able to act and react as necessary, even if limited information is available; not afraid to take charge of a situation; can overcome resistance to leadership and take unpopular stands when necessary.
      • Change Management—ability to successfully lead staff and/or a team amidst organizational change.
      • Solid Educational Background and Experience—clinical or advanced degree preferred along with a minimum of ten years of management experience, ideally in a non-profit organization, association or provider, with significant fiscal responsibility or equivalent experience in other areas. Leadership experience in the hospice and palliative care field is preferred.
